A flurry of scrapping for Spring 2009

So, not much scrapping in the last 12-18 months. I am starting to feel the urge again, though, as evidenced by the below. Two are original creations, one is a pre-made cluster frame that I pretty much just stuck on a background, and two are pre-made quick pages/brag book pages. Still, I think they turned out pretty cute.

I also made calendars for a couple other folks, using their photos. I won't show you all of them, since I just popped different pictures into the same layouts you see above. However, the March layout didn't work for anyone but Luke, so I created two different March ones for the intended recipients (didn't use the St. Patrick's one for BIL and his wife because they got married in March, so how could I not do a special wedding themed layout?!). I found a great picture of Georgia for Leah's June page, but it didn't really work for wedding photos (their calendar is all wedding photos), so I also created a new June page for them. I just got the prints of the 2008 CD calendar. I didn't get a chance to have any test prints made this year. I just ran out of time, and it was either order them now without a test print, or not have them done in time for Christmas. Sometimes, the prints turn out too dark and I prefer to lighten them, so I just had to hope they would turn out okay. And they did!! They look SOOOOO good, I am just about to bust. It's going to kill me not to give them to the recipients the minute they walk in the door!!! I'll post them sometime between Christmas and New Year's for you to see.

I completed it *way* too late last night (like 4 AM), but it is done done done! Now you just have to wait 6-7 weeks to see it. But I have it on good authority that it looks fabulous! And I tend to agree.

But I have nothing to show you. At least, not yet. I have 5 (yes, FIVE!) of the pages for the 2008 CD calendar completed, but given that several recipients read this blog, I can't post them just yet. Yes, the suspense is killing me! They look rather spiffy, if I do say so myself. I can't do the October one yet, since Halloween hasn't yet come, and I want to leave that option open. Plus we have some "fall activities" planned in the next couple of weeks that I hope will provide some great photo ops, so I may end up with some great pics for both October and November. But January, February, March, April, and June (yes, it is out of order; it is actually the first one I did) are all complete. I can't wait to show you!

In 11 weeks! (EEEEKKK!! Both because it is going to kill me to wait 11 weeks to show you, and because it is *only* 11 weeks until Christmas!!)

Sofia's Baby Announcements

See, I have been scrapping, it was just stuff I couldn't show you! LOL My best friend Connie had her baby three weeks ago, and I was allowed the honor and privilege of designing her baby announcement. And I went a bit overboard. I made up like 9 without photos for her to choose from. She chose her 4 favorite from there, and then I started plugging in photos. Some color, some black and white, some "color-tinted black and white" (you'll see); some photos worked better with some layouts than others. I ended up sending her 31 options made up of her favorite photos and layouts, and these were the four finalists. Not sure what she'll actually send out yet, but I thought I would show off some of my efforts. I can't take any credit for the sweet model, though; that was all Connie's doing! (Well, okay, and Jaime, but still.)

This is the beautiful daughter of my very good friend (and former bridesmaid) Leah. Miss Georgia was celebrating her first July 4th, and when I saw this adorable photo, I had to scrap it. But I also had to wait until the challenge was over *and* for the printed photo (which took forever) to arrive in North Carolina. Leah absolutely loved it, and I couldn't be more pleased!

Believe it or not. And I did actually scrap something. Okay, just one something since mid-June. That is an almost six week drought. But I've been really busy! And I can't even show you what I scrapped because it is a gift, so until I have had it printed and mailed to the recipient, I can't show you! As soon as I get word that she has received it, I'll post here, I promise.

And to make matters worse, I'm about to start working on Christmas gifts, which means I'll be scrapping several things that I won't be able to show you for months! That's no fun. Maybe I can squeeze in a few other things in the meantime. Like Luke's stitches, or his broken arm, or finally some Disney layouts, or his first trip to Fernbank, or....

Make it circular!

I just found this rockin' awesome tip from Christine Smith. Read all the details here, but she tells you how to take something straight, like a ribbon or stitching or even text, and turn it into a circle! I just tried it, and it worked like a charm! I had to do the steps just a touch differently in PSP8 than she has them here (written for PSE5, IIRC), but still. Check it out!

Dear Baby Girl,

We had no idea we would lose you so early. You were with us for almost 9 years, our faithful companion, The Good Kitty. We saved you from the pet store in September after we got married. You were sick, though we didn't know it, and it took $1000 worth of care to save you. Your sister was sadly not so fortunate. We still miss Gypsy. I can't imagine how long we will miss you. You slept on our pillows, you climbed the Christmas tree. You got lost in the shadows your first night with us, earning your name. You ate an entire Arby's roast beef sandwich all by yourself when you were just a kitten. You faithfully served as a fantasy baseball GM, Wall Spirit Shaman, Dragon Ninja, and President of the Kitty Financial Committee. You took on two new kittens in your domain with virtually no protest, and you all became fast friends, though there was no denying that you were Queen Bee of the house, keeping both "the kittens" and the new Orange Kitty in check. Finally started scrapping again

I got the urge to start scrapping BIL's wedding. After seeing such good reviews of the bound Shutterfly books, I think I will go that route in 8x8. Even if I can print the pages cheaper than $1 each (which would be difficult), once you add in the cost of a scrapbook and page protectors, it would be as much as a Shutterfly book. Plus, how cool is it to have an honest to goodness *bound* book all about you?! Well, them, but you get my point.

So, here are my first two pages. And no one go getting excited; I didn't do hardly anything. The LOVE element was pre-made; I just desaturated some of the "mother of pearl" type coloring it had. And the curves on the cover came like that, pearls and all. I just popped in the photo and added the text. Still, I think they look pretty spiffy! Now, I just need to bug the happy couple for all the photos everyone took so I can start on the inside. I have lots of photos, but not quite enough of the right kinds or the right people.

Roberta D'Achille on sale!

Roberta D'Achille of Rendered Memories has a zillion things in the clearance category. It is mostly old stuff from when she was still at other sites (she is now exclusive to Rendered Memories, IIRC), but some items I had been admiring for quite some time. And everything in the category is $0.50-$1.50. Hard to beat! I bought mumble, mumble ten mumble, mumble. Just thought I'd pass along my good fortune. I also shopped the Divine Digital grab bag sale, but I was rather disappointed in all three of those purchases. That $6 could have gone elsewhere with far better results. Ah well. I did pretty well with my first few grab bags from various digiscrap sites. No more for me, I'm afraid, unless it is a designer I just totally love and adore (I can think of a few). Perhaps this is the universe's way of telling me I've spent too much on digiscrapping lately (I really have). Maybe I should do more scrapping than shopping!!

First Haircut

I've been waiting to scrap these photos forever! I'm not completely thrilled with this one, so I may do another one with these same pictures, but I think it looks fine for the challenge. I've also had that first font (called Wake and Bake) forever as well, with absolutely no idea what to do with it! I think this was the perfect thing, even if I do say so myself.

I am officially impressed

I've been hearing so many people talk about PhotoBlast Actions (no affiliation), that when they went on sale (through the end of the day today at DigiScrapShak; no affiliation, just a happy customer), I decided I had to try them out. And I am officially impressed. I now see what everyone is talking about! Here are three versions of the same photo.

Then applying the ContraPop to the warmed photo:

Isn't that amazing? What had been a cool and semi-lifeless photo is now dazzling! I am so very impressed. And these are just the stand-alone basic actions, not the fancy "WOW" (their term) or Pro versions. I know people can do great things with those, and maybe when I get the hang of these, I'll try those, but presently those are too much money. But the ones I bought, to fix my three biggest photo problems (Over-Exposed Fix, Under-Exposed Fix, and Warm-Up), plus one to help pop the colors (ContraPop), will do just fine for me. Perhaps when I decide that I am doing more with monochrome photos, I'll invest in the "Black and White" set (which does sepia, midnight blue, and all sorts of other colors), but for now, these are just fine. I just wanted to share that I have tried a few of them, and I really do like them. Guess PhotoShop Elements will be getting used for more than just red-eye removal from now on! LOL

Happy 2007: The Big Reveal

Remember me assuring you that I was scrapping a few weeks ago, but I couldn't tell you what? Well, here it is: I made a CD Case Calendar for my family using pictures of Luke. So far, everyone has absolutely loved them! I even used them as my own self-made quick pages and popped in some photos of M for Shalini, then some of my BIL and soon-to-be SIL as personal gifts for them. A very big hit, I must say.

Well, after all that yesterday, I get something scrapped today that I can actually share! LOL I attended a chat at lunch, my first chat of any sort since I started back to work. If you finished your layout by the end of the chat (about 75 minutes), you got two full kits! You only got mini-kits if you finished by the weekend. So I worked my fingers off and got it done. It is not to the standards that I would normally use, and I may go back and tinker with it later, but I'm pretty happy with it.

Alive and Scrapping!

Just wanted to let everyone know that I am not dead. I am here, and I am scrapping. I've completed 10 pages since I last posted, but I can't show you! They're for various Christmas gifts, so you'll have to wait two whole months to see them. Sorry! But it will be worth the wait. Beyond those 10 pages, I haven't had a lot of time or energy for scrapping. Life is just rather busy at the moment. Perhaps after the holidays.

I didn't realize I had not posted them until I was flipping through my printed layouts and realized that two were missing. These were for various challenges I had already begun to participate in when my grandmother died, so I finished them up the night before we left, uploaded to the proper galleries, and then left the next morning. Never thought to post them here, but I'm sure you understand. Anyway, hope you enjoy them now.

Man, do I know how to bargain shop or what? First, Do It Digi is closing as of September 21, so if you want to buy something, buy it right now, download it immediately, and be sure you unzip it all to make sure none of it is corrupt before Sept 21! Here's what I picked up:

I also got two frame collections, Boy Frames and Girl Frames, but resized to 150x150, the previews are pretty useless, so just click the links to see them. They are really neat! Something I never would have purchased for full price, but it was almost a crime not to get them for that price.

That's all for me! Not any scrapping done at all since this last one of Luke thinking. Probably soon, though, since his first day of daycare is tomorrow. We'll see how the week goes. Not sure if there will be much scrapping time as we all get used to the new routine. I hope it goes well. Wish us luck!

Not the most stellar layout, I admit. Certainly doesn't do justice to all the things my dad means to me. But I realized at about 1:30 AM this morning that the new challenges go up at Scrap Mommies on the 15th, which means that all challenge entries for the previous time period (and the kit I am after) have to be done before then! So I needed stuff done before the new challenges go up the morning of the 15th, which cuts off a day more than I thought I had. ACK! So I whipped this up, and it covers two challenges, which means I am now done done done! WHEW!!

Someone made the observation that we often scrap about stuff we like, but almost never about stuff we don't, so that was this challenge. And before anyone gets really impressed, I did not make all those little strips. I just combined a plain cream paper with the joined circles on it with a paper that came with the strips and star circles. I was planning to use strips to hold each word anyway, and when I saw this paper, I figured I'd let it do the work for me!

I actually finished this one before Painted Tranquility, but I had to wait for permission from my aunt to post it, since it is her photograph. (Technically, I shouldn't have even used it without asking, but I had a hunch she wouldn't mind, and I'm on a deadline.)

Painted Tranquility

As soon as I saw the inspiration painting, I immediately started thinking about calm and peacefulness and tranquility. I thought it would be cool to incorporate the words into the brush strokes that feature so prominently in the original painting (5th one down), but I couldn't figure out how to do them. Then I stumbled across a painted brush strokes brush set this weekend, and I knew it was meant to be.

The photos are of my beloved high school, one for each of the 9 buildings on campus, and one of the bell that sits out front. And yes, despite the name, this is a *public* high school.

Journaling: "That's me. Glynn Academy Class of 1994. Has it really been that long? Like everyone else, I certainly had my awful high school moments, but overall, I really liked it. I graduated 5th in my class. I had lots of friends, some of which I still know. I moved in many circles, though I was a band geek and proud of it. I had one boyfriend, but we won't talk about him! (That was probably the worst part of high school for me.) I was thin (well, after 9th grade) and proud and confident. I knew what I wanted and I went for it. I was, and am still, extremely proud to be a Glynn Academy Red Terror, just like my father. That may not seem amazing to some, but given that we had moved 8 times by then, to end up at the same high school as my father is pretty wild. I love the old buildings and the history; GA is the second oldest public school in Georgia, and most buildings date from the 1920s. It was just a great time for me. I enjoyed learning, I enjoyed the people, I enjoyed the experiences (well, most of them). I just enjoyed life. Long live the Red and White."

Birthday Pout

Another for Scrap Mommies, but it is not a combined one, so that still leaves me 9 to go, and only six days. Not sure if I'll make it or not, but I'll sure try. This challenge was to scrap your child pouting. I actually don't have many pouting photos. When he was little, the pout was your "five second warning" that he was about to explode, so one was prone to drop the camera (figuratively) and run to comfort him!

I was so excited to get to show you my most favorite place on Earth and to buy you your first set of Mouse Ears, with your name on the back, of course. Unfortunately, the trip did not go as well as I would have liked. No one slept very well at the hotel, least of all you. It rained the entire day, so you didn't spend much time in the stroller. Finally, the weather broke, with just two hours before park close. I've never done so much in so little time in my life! But you sure seemed to enjoy it, so that is ultimately the most important thing. I cannot wait for this year's trip!"

What have I done?

For once, a post with no layout. I have been subscribed to the newsletter at Scrap Mommies for a few months now, but since I only started doing challenges in the last six weeks or so, I hadn't looked there for them. I attended the newsletter release chat the other night (because I just happened to already be on the computer when the reminder came across; I didn't make it a point to attend, though I may do so in the future), and I had a ball! So I checked out their forums today.

Holy cow, do they have a ton of challenges!! And unlike some other sites (where I do not participate because of the following), you do NOT have to do every single challenge in order to get all the pieces of the kit; you only have to do 12 (which sounds like a lot, until you realize that there are 22 to choose from; and the other site requires like 16 or 17). And even better, you can use one layout to combine two challenges, so you only have to do 6 (if you're good, and careful about which ones you pick). Sweet! (And as I mentioned at the chat, why do I use that word online when I *never* use it IRL? LOL) It has been harder than I thought to pick 12 challenges. I have 10, and I'm still deciding.

Oh, and here is the other catch. There are two kits, thus two "rounds" per month. So you only have about 2 weeks to get them all done. The first August round runs August 1-15. And since I just found it today.... yes, that leaves me only 9 days to crack out a minimum of 6 layouts (and a typical layout takes me about 3-4 hours; seriously). What on earth have I gotten myself into?! But I love this kit so much, I absolutely have to have it, so I will do my darnedest to get it done. Watch for (hopefully) lots of new layouts popping up in the next several days!

This may be the only month I can do this, though, since I might have a job offer, and with Luke at home (and this would be a work from home thing), it will seriously cut into my scrapping time. It's still not official, though, but I'd really like to have this job. We'll see. I'll keep you posted.

Growing Like a Weed

This was my first ever ad challenge. Lots of sites will post an ad of some sort (billboard, magazine ad spread, etc) that you can then use for inspiration. It is much more ambiguous than a scraplift or a sketch challenge, because the idea is to simply be inspired, not necessarily to copy. You can use the structure, the colors, the subject, or just however it happens to "click" with you. Being the engineering type that I am, this is much harder for me, but I was immediately struck with the idea for this layout when I saw the ad (there were actually two, and you could pick). Want to see the original ad? Click me! This was also my first ever use of the bevel function in PSP. Clearly, I need to work on it a bit more, but I love the dimension it added to the flowers instead of them being "flat" around the photos.

Rendered Memories Clicky Finger

Okay, Roberta D'Achille of Rendered Memories is *finally* having a sale. I absolutley LOVE her stuff, but (sorry Roberta) it is way overpriced. $7.50 for a regular sized kit is just too much, and she virtually never has a sale (or if so, it's only 10-15% off, which isn't enough for me). Now, it is high quality stuff, don't get me wrong. Were it regularly priced in the $5-5.50 range, I would buy it for full price, because it is worth that to me (I rarely pay the full $5 for your "average" kit; I'm a bargain hunter!). The 25% off she is having on select kits is perfect, though, and I even bought one thing that was not on sale (the swirl brushes; now I just really have to learn to use them, LOL!). So here are my spoils:

I had a really hard time with this challenge. The steep angle of all of the elements made it difficult for me to find a photo that I was happy with the final look. I did take advantage of the fact that it made drop shadows difficult (thus losing definition between the papers and appearing very flat), so I decided to try the "stitched together" look, and I'm fairly happy with it.

Ghosts of the Past

This layout was done for a challenge in which you had to use a black and white photo. I don't have any filters yet, so I have to rely basically on automatic settings to convert my color photos to black and white, and I'm not very good at picking photos that will convert well, so this was *quite* a challenge for me. But when I saw this photo, I knew it was the right one, and I knew immediately what I wanted to do with it. I know it is an extremely simple layout, but sometimes, less is more, and I am thrilled with it.

Even though it is a photo of the Korean War Memorial in Washington, DC, it is my tribute to all the amazing men and women of the United States Armed Forces, past and present, including (but not limited to) my cousin Joe Coleman, my brother in law Michael Gaston, family friend Lamar Crawford (survivor of the USS Arizona Pearl Harbor), and both of my amazing grandfathers, Robert Coleman and Rufus Warren.

Getting together with DH's family is not something that happens often, but we actually managed it for his brother's wedding. Unfortunately, BIL and his wife are no longer together, but these photos are still special to me. (And before it comes up, that is his mom, but that is not his dad.) And you'd better enjoy it, because you won't see me scrapping myself very often! I just happen to like this photo (which even includes Luke, since I was about 4 months pregnant). I am also extremely proud of myself for learning how to do text in a circle. Go me!

When I was flipping through the photos that my friend Sandi took on her recent trip to Las Vegas, I absolutely fell in love with this photo of the lobby fountain. She graciously allowed me to borrow it, though I am not sure this layout does it justice.
